  Making a   Mission-Critical
Connection

Watch the Video

As the USO continues to lead the way in uniting all Americans to actively support the men, women and families of our military, we will keep the importance and value of the human connection at the forefront of our mission. Connecting Americans to all service members, around the world. Strengthening the bonds between service members and their families. Linking their families to services that meet their needs. And keeping these human connections strong because it is essential to the health and well-being of our country.

Our vision is for the USO to be the way Americans connect with, support and strengthen our service members and military families. And this is our five-part plan to carry out this mission as we move the USO forward:

1 CREATE A MEANINGFUL IMPACT ON OUR MILITARY COMMUNITY

2 STRENGTHEN OUR BRAND EQUITY

3 FORTIFY FINANCIAL STRENGTH

4 FOSTER A CULTURE OF UNITY AND EXCELLENCE

5 ADOPT A DATA-DRIVEN, DIGITAL-FOCUSED MINDSET

CREATE A MEANINGFUL IMPACT ON OUR MILITARY COMMUNITY

PRIORITY 1

Reach, support and uplift all service members and their families through relevant programs that attract supporters to our vision and mission.

PLAN OF ACTION

We will seek a deeper understanding of where the USO has opportunities to strengthen and create new connections with today’s service members. As we identify these emerging needs, we will modernize current programs or establish relevant, high-impact programs to meet them.

We will optimize support and funding opportunities for donors who share our view on meeting the emerging needs of our service members.

We will revisit and re-evaluate our programs and services regularly to ensure each is relevant, valuable and effective.

We will implement a USO Growth Strategy Cell that develops new business lines and explores key areas of growth and investment to ensure we are always delivering the most effective programs to those we serve.

MEASURING SUCCESS

STRENGTHEN OUR BRAND EQUITY

PRIORITY 2

Position the USO as a relevant, critical, trusted and unique brand, as we engage new donors and build broad awareness of the importance of the USO’s mission to all Americans.

PLAN OF ACTION

We will target Generation X and Y donors, tap into their motivations for giving, and reach them with effective and relevant messaging that converts them into USO supporters.

We will tell compelling stories about the impact that USO supporters have on our military community in a way that reinvigorates the connection between civilians and service members and reasserts the USO’s importance to our nation.

We will strengthen and maintain key relationships in Congress and the Executive Branch.

MEASURING SUCCESS

FORTIFY FINANCIAL STRENGTH

PRIORITY 3

Maintain strong and steady financial growth to ensure that we can indefinitely provide the resources needed to fulfill our mission and pivot quickly to support the changing needs of the military.

PLAN OF ACTION

We will grow revenue by diversifying our fundraising channels to reach an expanded donor audience — adjusting strategies to match the way today’s donors prefer to give.

We will align our planning and budgeting processes with our new strategic initiatives and deploy resources needed to reach our long-term goals.

We will seek greater efficiencies in our internal processes — with a focused effort on accountability and transparency across all sectors of our organization.

MEASURING SUCCESS

FOSTER A CULTURE OF UNITY AND EXCELLENCE

PRIORITY 4

Cultivate a united, supportive and mission-driven work environment that attracts, develops and retains high-quality talent in both our workforce and volunteers.

PLAN OF ACTION

We will remain competitive, innovative and impactful through diversity and inclusiveness at all levels of the organization.

We will continue to evolve as a regionally unified organization by finding ways to be more effective and efficient in our communications and processes.

We will invest in our future leaders with training, development and opportunities to grow, thrive and advance in their careers as they carry the USO’s mission forward.

We will give our volunteers ongoing opportunities to get involved in meaningful, hands-on, mission-driven work — with a focus on attracting and inspiring the next generation of volunteers.

MEASURING SUCCESS

ADOPT A DATA-DRIVEN, DIGITAL-FOCUSED MINDSET

PRIORITY 5

Leverage data and technology to strengthen our reach and effectiveness.

PLAN OF ACTION

We will create a data-driven culture that informs decision-making in our programming, fundraising and volunteer recruitment efforts.

We will make it easier for our service members, military families and donors to connect and engage with the USO by delivering data-supported digital content.

We will make ‘digital’ a way of life throughout the organization, while keeping the importance of the human connection at the forefront of our mission.

impact

With many USO locations temporarily suspending operations in 2020 due to COVID-19, the USO saw a significant decrease in center visits. However, the organization quickly pivoted to provide virtual programming to service members and their families and socially distanced in-person support to service members on the front lines of the fight against the pandemic to ensure the military community stayed connected and remained resilient. *(2020 USO Impact Data)

Marching on

Our military is a vital thread to the fabric of our nation. They protect and we honor. And it is our vision to lead the way in uniting all Americans to actively support the men, women and families of our military.

As we move ahead and look to the future, these five priorities will guide our organization and enable us to keep rising to the ever-changing challenges of military life. That means engaging and empowering our supporters and donors to use our collective strength in service to those who voluntarily and selflessly step into danger to serve our country.

When all of these goals are met, the human connection between our military community and the very people they have committed their lives to protecting will be stronger and more resilient than ever. And this has the power to change lives, communities and our country, all for the better.

Strengthening this bond is what the USO was created to do more than 80 years ago. And this strategic plan ensures that never changes.
